The gorgeous Breville Café Roma ESP8XL Espresso Machine is a espresso machine that is both a show piece in your kitchen, and a first rate espresso maker!I got mine for under 200.00 at Amazon.com, which is a STEAL, so I figured it was a good time to buy the ESP8XL!
Right out of the box, it looks VERY strudily constructed, durable and attractive!
Basically, theESP8XLis built like a fort; thick solid stainless steel encases many very functional components that come together to yield a great cup of espresso.
While it may be built like a fort, the ESP8XL doesn’t look like a fort, and my kitchen has never looked better!
Let's put first things first, Like many other top level espresso makers, the Breville Café Roma is a pump driven espresso maker that has a 15 bar pump which produces lots of pressure through its heater to a portafilter.
the Breville ESP8XL has 3 included inserts: single, double and ESE Pod. There is a definite indicator on the pod adapter so you won’t mistake it for the single basket. Needless to say, theESP8XL uses pods.
This model has an ample water reservoir (40+ ounces), to get to it, you'll notice a flip up door on the rear right.
The reservoir features a window that allows you to check the water level in the reservoir. Unfortunately, this window sits under a cabinet overhang, it’s hard to get enough light on the thing to really get a good view of the water level. Picky, picky!
The jumbo reservoir can make alot of espresso, so it won't be necessary to fill it all the time. The reservoir fits very securely when placed in the unit.
It's Easy To Make GREAT Espresso With The ESP8XL!
The steam wand is placed to the right side, in front of the water sight glass window. The wand does not move or rotate. The wand has a rubber tipped adapter that is perfect for frothing milk for a cappuccino, but not suited for a latte’s steamed milk. For a great frothy cappuccino, keep the tip. If you want a latte, pull it off; it slides away easily.
The controls on the ESP8XL are easily understood and practical. You'll easily notice a rocker switch in the center of the front panel which turns the heater on.
Heating the Breville ESP8XL to the correct temperature is faster than most machines I have tested, about 11/2 minutes total,
Generally, I see some heat in as little as 45 seconds. If you stand there and wait for it, it will seem like it takes forever! Just keep yourself busy by getting cups and grinding espresso or grabbing a pod, you'll be enjoying Breville EXP8XL espresso in no time!
